Crater Lake was established as a National Park in 1902. In preparing for it’s hundred year celebration, a National Park Artist in Residence program was created for the year 2001. Waters was chosen as an artist in residence and resided at the park during the month of October, 2001. Following the residency, the Crater Lake Centennial Exhibition was held at the Schneider Museum of Art in Ashland Oregon in 2002.

Along with painting along the rim, and the inspiration of experiencing the lake by boat, she also painted at the nearby rivers. The Rogue River and Wood Rivers start from streams on the northern and eastern edge of Crater Lake.
